Style Direction: Watercolor Goth

Hello friends!
How are you on this fine spring day? I can literally hear birds chirping outside of my window. Even the grating sound of someone continuously pressing the buzzer in my neighbor's apartment can't annoy me today.
That being said, it is finals right now, and I kind of feel like I'm going to keel over and explode at any minute now. If you are in the middle of finals as you read this, good luck and remember to breathe!

In the spirit of spring time, I've decided to write up a little Style Direction post featuring my Spring and Summer 2012 style that I'm feeling right now.

For lack of a better name, I'm going to temporarily title it

Wicked Watercolor Riot GURL

or maybe Wicked for short. Maybe FROTH- frothy fresh goth.  Watercolor Wicked? There we go.  I like them both.

So anyway, forging on! When it comes to fashion, (and life), I crush on everything.  I can't help but mix a million elements into my personal style. My ADHD addled art student brain sops up everything and mixes it in the blender to spit out a darkly glittering cocktail of INSPIRING FEELINGS.

The recipe for my Watercolor Wicked style is as follows:

Take the fabrics, jewelry, and silhouettes of the First War era glam, dunk it in the colors of a Kathy Dennis Impressionist Watercolor, and sprinkle in the accessories of a true riot punk.

Use as many OLD THINGS as possible to achieve this look. (And remember, darling, time is elastic, and old is subjective.)

all images are click-through to source

what i'm into for summer: fluffy shorts under fifties dresses, shredded and cropped tees, Peter Pan collars, fresh-to-death colorful sneakers, gypsy jewelry, comic book tee-shirts, spiked accessories, knee socks, black, pastels, flowers in my hair, snapbacks and baseball caps.

What's your style inspiration this summer?

Inspiration: Christian Joy

Christian Joy.
She is a designer of costumes, of monsters, and of rock and roll. She was the first designer that I was inspired by and looked up to.

Christian Joy was born Christiane Joy Hultquist in Iowa. She began designing in Brooklyn around 2000 with no formal training. She met Karen O, lead singer of the band Yeah Yeah Yeahs in 2001 and began designing unique costumes for Karen's stage appearances.
"Christian Joy and Karen O met when Joy worked as a shop girl for Daryl K, to which the future rock star was a regular. After a few cocktails, Joy began to design the outfits that would eventually define Karen O's onstage persona." (Tongue in Chic)
I have always been into fashion and the music scene, and Christian Joy and Karen O made me realize that music and fashion influence each other and are inseparable. If you look back in cultural history, you most likely think of the music and clothing from each time period, together. Each look means something and each song means something too. This is why movements in music and trends in fashion coincide.

Christian Joy in her studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
She has designed for the UK band The Klaxons. In 2007 her costume designs were featured at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London as part of the New York Fashion Now exhibit. In September 2009, Joy costumes were featured in a Where The Wild Things Are pop-up shop in Los Angeles. (The first picture in this post is a photo from this costcollection.)

Some of Christian Joy's work:

Designs for the stage
The many costumes of Karen O.

I follow everything that Karen O wears on the stage. She makes the clothing come alive. She proves that clothing is meant to be worn, it is an extension of self. I can help you express who you are, or help you become another person entirely.
Christian Joy's clothing and costumes prove that anything really is possible in fashion.

What I Wore: Lady Gaga Fashion Moments

On Friday night  I went to a show at my old High School called GaGaPalooza. It was a senior showcase for the drama club performing only Lady Gaga songs. The entire thing was run one of my best friends and it was awesome! I am so proud of him (Friday was also his 18th birthday). None of the pictures that I took of the event were any good, so I will try to post some good ones later!
This is what I wore: my interpretation of the "Just Dance" video outfit, plus a lobster mask that I made!
I was trying to copy this look:

I also had a blue lightening bolt on my face:
By the end of the night, the blue makeup was smeared and my hair was ridiculous and I felt like Gaga in the "Just Dance" video (minus the whale humping) and I really believed for a moment that maybe I secretly was Lady Gaga....fun times.

While I was trying to figure out what to wear, I made a folder of some of my favorite Lady Gaga fashion moments ever. Here are a few:

And, to go out with a bang!

What's inspiring you?

New Year's Resolutions

Here at Wishful Thinking, we are going to do something a little bit different as we look towards the new year ahead.

The beginning of a new year is probably the only time I make lists and get organized!
The first list is dreams. I daydream all day long about the magical life I want to have, and the magic that I want to spread to others!
The second list is resolutions to fulfill, either in the new year or beginning next year, that will help achieve those dreams.

Here is my personal list:

♥ Share yours in the comments!

WISH!

I wish to be a designer of dreams, a style discoverer, a pilot to the sun.
I wish to help the world through creative works.
I wish to be a fashion designer, and challenge conventional ideas of fashion and style
I wish to be part of the creation of music in some way.
I wish to spread the magic and love that I feel in my life every day.
I wish to travel to all parts of the world

ACTIONS!

I will learn Italian
I will take steps to learning to properly play the piano
I will continue to develop as an artist
I will make friends with many more amazing people!
I will help out and volunteer more!
I will spread whimsy everywhere I go (it is my favorite word!)

RESOLUTIONS

Instead of Resolutions, I have little phrases that remind me to stay focused on the ideas in my list!
This year, I have three main ideas that I want to stay focused on as I make my adventurous way through the year!

Get your HEART racing!

♥ Make your DREAM life happen!

♥ SHARE the LOVE!

I am so excited!  It is time to look back on the decade (!) with love and no regrets!
It is time to look ahead and get excited for a new start!

Thanks for reading, everyone! I love you!
See you next year!

Things I Love

Hello lovelies! I hope everyone is having a fabulous week so far!
Right now I'm totally procrastinating taking a break and thinking about all the things I love this week!  Would you like to join me?

Here are some links and videos to get us started:

♥ THIS IS THE COOLEST THING EVER: an Austrian composer hacked a mechanical piano to recite text. WAY AWESOME.

Greg Kadel Photography is all so glamorous!

♥ And speaking of glamour, Glamour Kills Clothing just came out with their new winter line!

♥ Remember this? Rihanna's performance of "Disturbia" at the 2008 VMA's. It was awesome!

♥ Possibly the most ridiculous BEST song ever.  There is a combination Taco Bell and Pizza Hut about a block away from my building, and I smile every time I pass it.  I always think of this song!

This blog is like the virtual equivalent of a gossip packed sleepover in a coffee shop with your best friends.  It is written by the hilarious and lovely Aquarius Alexi Celine Wasser from Los Angeles, California. Go read it nownownow!

Other, non-internet-y things that I'm loving this week:

How I Met Your Mother. Definitely one of the funniest shows I have ever seen. I recently got really into it, watched nearly every existing episode online and I am now HOOKED. Neil Patrick Harris = THE MAN.
[But we all knew that.]

Anticipation! I'm going to see one of my favorite bands tomorrow: Hit the Lights !

To Write Love On Her Arms
If you don't know what this is, just go the the website and read it. They have done some awesome stuff and events on facebook like "Write LOVE On Your Arms Day" have really made it popular and helped to spread the word.

Love Eachother, Love Yourself!

Also, school, fun assignments, graphic design, typography, my friends, long conversations through facebook comments on a picture, Lady Gaga, looking forward to Thanksgiving break and seeing friends, Japanese grocery stores, animal ear headbands, bubble guns, talking to cute boys, talking about traveling, making silly videos, being really corny, and all of you!

Okay, it's your turn. Don't hold back, now.  Grab a friend or three, play your favorite song, and shout it to the sky!
What are you loving this week?!

Bad Romance

If you haven't seen this video yet, DO IT NOW.
It is amazing!

As you probably know, I love all things Lady Gaga. I think she is a true artist. Her performance is fabulously over-the-top but she still gives off a down-to-earth vibe of acceptance.

Her new video, Bad Romance, is great in so many ways that I'm not even going to write about it....just watch it.  [And check out the McQueen!]

Halloween 2009!

I LOVE Halloween! Free candy, amazing costumes, galavanting with no sleep, and en epic night that feels festive, spiritual, and creepy all at the same time. It's one of my favorite days of the year, and it is approaching quickly!

"…Beware the autumn people...for these beings, fall is the only normal season, the only weather, there be no choice beyond.
Where do they come from? The dust. Where do they go? The grave. Does blood stir their veins? No, the night wind....
They sift the human storm for souls, eat flesh of reason, fill tombs with sinners. They frenzy forth. In gusts they beetle-scurry, creep, thread, filter, motion, make all moons sullen, and surely cloud al clear-run waters. The spider-web hears them, trembles—breaks.
Such are the autumn people. Beware of them."
Something Wicked This Way Comes, by Ray Bradbury. Chapter 38.

Here is some inspiration:

To further get in the Halloween mood, my favorite book to read is Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. It is dark, twisted, amazing, and had me one hundred percent on the edge of my seat, holding my breath the entire way through.
There's also a movie that has some really creepy, beautiful carnival imagery.

My favorite Halloween movie, however, is Hocus Pocus!
Hello, young Sarah Jessica Parker!

And of course, the faabulous Bette Midler. I love this scene! :

What are your plans for Halloween? And what will you wear?
