Cell Phone Uploads, My First Parsons Project, and Anna Sui

Anna Sui came and did an interview at Parsons in the Fashion Building. Uh, she mostly talked about how when she was in school at Parsons she didn't go to class much and went to a lot of clubs! Haha, I don't think that our dean, Simon Collins, was too happy about that. Students at Parsons nowadays could DEFINITELY not get away with that! You'd fail in an instant. She also stressed the importance of internships. It's true dude!

Here is a not-so-great cell phone photo of the interview. Students were allowed to go see it and they recorded it live also.
After it was over, Anna and the dean got into the elevator going up. I also had to get back to class but then the dean jumped out for a minute and my and a few of my friends were in the elevator with Anna Sui!  Ahhh, it was so cool, but I froze and couldn't think of anything to say to her besides, "Thanks so much, that was cool." Gosh I am lame. It's like when I met Richard Chai at Teen Vogue Fashion University (oh my gosh I haven't written about that yet have I? I am terrible and sorry.) I ran up to him after his talk and as like YOU ARE SO AMAZING AND INSPIRING ZOMGZ.  He was totally sweet about it though. ANYWAY! Moving on...

I finally uploaded some pictures from my phone.  Here is my first project in Concepts class for Sophomore Fashion Design. I snapped a picture right before my presentation and critique. I was nervous!
The project was "fall dresses". Here's my mood board, fabric board (HAHA its awful), flats, and croquis.  Um, I promise my croquis have gotten much better throughout the semester.  My inspiration was the circus.

Here are some terrible-quality photos of my drawing process. The assignment was rendering prints.

And a random sketch from drawing class:

Sisters on the Runway

In October I was part of the Sisters on the Runway fashion show at Parsons in October.  Sisters on the Runway is an organization started by 3 students to raise awareness and money for women affected by domestic violence.
The show was held at the Fashion building at Parsons the New School for Design- on the same runway that Project Runway is filmed on!
I worked together with my friend Jack to create a mini collection inspired by the women at Safe Horizon, a center for domestic violence survivors.  We called it Rebirth and sought inspiration in phoenixes and the sunrise.
Here is the collection description blurb from the program:
This ready to wear collection is about starting fresh.  The white symbolizes a new canvas and beginning again again.  We took inspiration from Safe Horizon and the mythical phoenix.  We worked together to make a collection that represents the rebirth of life and strength in women.  This collection celebrates a renewal of spirit.
Original concept sketches:

Our fabulous models were Jennifer, Britt, Becca, and Jules. They were amazing!
 Okayyyy picture storm time:

Parsons Projects: The Coffee Vest

I've gotten some requests to show the projects, assignments, and work that I do at school. I usually get pretty self-concious about my work because I am never satisfied or finished but...I will do it. For you guys! Never let anyone tell you that I don't looove you pleeaseeee.

Here is a project I did in my 3-Dimensional Design Class.
The assignment: Create a garment that can be worn on the torso that relates to the theme or issue of "survival". Think in terms of urban survival, functionality, and connection.  It must include a cantilever (extension-like an umbrella) and must transform in some way. Cantilever should change the form as well as alter the function of the body covering. Must have an identifiable function in an urban or social environment that changes perception or awareness of viewers. Must also incorporate a zipper.
Aaaah. Sounds toootally simple, right?

My Project: I decided to take a somewhat humorous- but still decidedly functional- approach to "solving" this assignment. I designed a waterproof rain-vest that turned into a coffee dispenser. It had an oversized hood and an inside, hidden plastic bladder that can hold coffee. You can take off the vest, undo the cantilever (which I converted out of a clamp-able beach umbrella), clamp it to the table, undo a zipper, and treat everyone to some coffee! It brings people together and makes them happy. For me, that would be the ultimate savior of rainy days. My project is a dramatization of people's need for coffee to "survive" the day
Here are some preliminary sketches for what I wanted my project to be:

I have no idea why this one says "air pirates" or why the figures all have eye patches....

Of course, in design things always change from the beginning of the process to the end. I chose a cheaper- and more fun! - material. I also opted not to make sleeves. My professor suggested that they the piece could be very simple. Form Vs. Function is a big issue here, and having sleeves was a little unnecessary.
We had about a week to execute the final project.
Sorry I don't have tons of great pictures! Here are some photos of the vest on a dress form:

My presentation board:
I think that is allll.
Have you done any cool projects lately?

Formspring Q&A

Hey cuties!
I've been getting some questions on formspring [keep it up] and I decided to post a few questions and my answers here every once in a while.
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Who are your favorite designers?

Assuming you mean fashion designers: Vivienne Westwood, for sure! I think she is an amazing person as well as a groundbreaking designer, and she is mostly self-taught! She maintains personal strength and a political standpoint in an extremely looks- based industry. She also combined music and fashion in a way that made the two things inseparable even today. <3 I also think Alexander McQueen is crazy and brilliant, and Marc Jacobs has done some really awesome things. And a few of my very talented friends are great designers!

[I posted this answer four weeks ago. RIP McQueen]

What one thing are you exceptionally good at?

procrastinating

What's the most challenging part about Parsons? What's the best part? (:

The most challenging part about Parsons is getting all of my work finished, on time, to the BEST of my ability, on little amounts of sleep, haha! Also it can be tough to keep ahold of myself and my artistic vision when working around so many talented people and tough professors. The BEST part? Definitely all of the people I have met, from all over the world, who are awesome in their own way. I have learned so much both inside and outside of class, and I feel grateful every day to be studying at an amazing university in the most fabulous and unpredictable city. :]

This is what a Parsons all-nighter looks like!

What's your biggest aspiration?

aspiration: strong desire or goal; the release of a strong burst of air after some obstructions. the 2 definitions make sense together, don't you think? this is a tough one, but I have a few goals for my life: open a music venue/fashion boutique with my own line, to combine the ultimate creative experience for the soul; travel the world and learn as much as possible so i can give something special to the world; and inspire and motivate others to do the same!

Whats ur biggest regret?

"When you look back on your life, you'll regret the things you didn't do more than the ones you did" (H. Jackson Brown) I tend to agree with this. However, I try not to have regrets! You can't change the past, so just focus on trying to make the future better.

what's it like going to an art school? is EVERYONE in your classes super artsy/ talented? are ur teachers / other students harsh in critiques?

most people in my classes are really talented, but everyone is good at different things or talented in a different way, which i love. it can get intimidating, and some students and most of the teachers can be really harsh in critiquing. i love it though! i also wrote a little about my experience with school so far here: My Experience at Parsons so Far

What kind of clothes do ya want to design? What do you have to offer to the industry?

i want to design all kinds of things: i dream about all kinds of things. i want to challenge the way people see fashion and show how the challenges of the world contrast with the beauty of the human body. i also like to use the way that music and fashion are intertwined in things i design: hello performance artists and rock stars, i'm yours. honestly, my dream is to see something i've designed on Lady Gaga.! she's amazing and brings everything she wears to life

Thanks for the questions everyone, keep 'em coming!
xx, Nikkidee :]

Parsons School of Design: My Story, Part Two

Buona sera, birdies!

The fabulous Lexy asked me some questions in the comments of my last Parsons post, so I'm going to try to answer a few.

How would you describe your teachers?
It really depends on the teacher.  Most of them are professionals in their field, and can be very tough on students.  They expect excellent work and professional attitudes, but many teachers stay in touch with their students and can be a great contact to have.

How would you describe your classes?
A lot of work! Most of the teachers I have had stuff a lot of information and work into the class period!  For foundation year, all of my classes were 3 hours long each except for drawing and lab. Those two classes are six hours long each. That can seem like a long time, but when you are working the whole time it can fly by.  The first semester of foundation year at Parsons is pretty rigid, because everyone has the same classes and must learn the fundamentals and basics of art and design. The second semester, students have a bit more freedom in choosing their classes and are supposed to have a lot more freedom in their work. My teachers liked to take us to places outside the classroom to give us examples of things we were learning.  I have gone to museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Natural History. My art history professor loved to take us to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I have also gone on field trips to art galleries, Printed Matter, and even just down the street to look at poster designs.  There is also a lot of outside work given, to use the information you learn in class. Students must learn to be very independent and get used to the city, but I also have made a lot of friends in my classes and worked together with them outside of class.

A project I did for 3D class.

A project I did for lab class with two other people.

How would you compare Parsons to other art and design schools?
I can't really compare that much, since Parsons is the only one that I am attending! However based on research and friends, I have heard a lot of things about other schools.  My friend goes to FIT as a photography major and he really enjoys it for that particular subject; plus since it is a SUNY school it is cheaper!  However I have another friend who went there for Fashion Marketing and didn't like it much. No matter what your major, it really really depends on the person. I have heard different things about Parsons, FIT, RISD, FIDM, Marist, Berkeley, MICA, and the Art Institutes.   Location can also be a big factor: some people like to live in cities, some people like to go to a big school, and some people do not!  Ask around and do your research!

How much work do you get on a nightly and weekly basis?
Again, it depends on the teacher and the class.  As long as you are organized and focused, your work will get done. [I am a big procrastinator, so focus is a big one for me!]  You will probably have to pull some all nighters, but this is college- it happens!  It is possible, I promise! You are often expected to travel to other places in the city for an assignment, which can be tough if you don't live in the city and are a commuter.  Art and fashion school isn't always as glamorous as it seems, and it takes hard work and dedication, but I promise that it is so worth it! I am having the time of my life! If you are doing what you love to do, a lot of the time the homework doesn't even seem like work.  I feel thankful and lucky every day that I get to learn about art and design and meet people who are just as passionate about it as I am!

Ooooh, frustrating. :p

What kinds of things did you submit in your portfolio?
I've seen portfolios that were very very different from mine, and some very different answers to the Parsons challenge. It's all about the individual.  At Parsons, we were required to submit both a portfolio and a Parsons Challenge "response".  I included descriptions, or "artist statements" for each piece I submitted in my portfolio.  I was also required to write a short description for each part of my Parsons Challenge. Here is the link for my portfolio on Flickr.   Here is the link for my Parsons Challenge-however I am not sure if the question is the same ever year.
I would suggest including both real life studies and work that is from your imagination, and including figures and still life.  Include many differeny medias is you would like, but stick to what you are good at.  I also went for an interview, where someone from admissions reviewed my portfolio (not formally) and interviewed me a bit.  I also had a chance to ask her about the school.  I showed interest in the study abroad program and...I don't really remember, but I'm pretty sure I showed mega enthusiasm in all of the programs, haha.  I wore an outfit that was dressed up but still showed my personality- one of my style rules is, "if you want to be remembered, wear a hat!" ;]  Just be yourself, and let your artwork show who you are and your point of view!

Lastly, though, don't worry too much about it.  Stay true to yourself, work hard, and believe that if you are meant to be somewhere, it will happen!

xx, Nikkidee! :]
