Parsons School of Design: My story, part one.

I've had a lot of people writing to ask me about Parsons. If you follow my blog, you know that I'm a foundation year freshman at Parsons School of Design, or Parsons the New School for Design.

Parsons is a university in New York City for art and design.
♥ I am currently a freshman in the foundation program, which nearly all freshman have to complete.  The exception to this is direct-entry majors such as Photography and Design and Management.  Students apply to the foundation program with their intended major, and then officially declare their major at the end of freshman year.
♥ I'm planning to major in fashion design.
♥ I applied to five schools and was accepted to all of them.
♥ Two of them were strictly art or design schools.

Applying was very stressful: I worked on my portfolio, went to portfolio reviews, went to an interview, and submitted 3 recommendations. You also have to submit your solution to the parsons challenge. I think that the school looks for both creativity and technical skill.  You must also have the ability to be articulate about your work.

A piece from my portfolio: ink on paper.

I think that Parsons looks for people with certain qualities: people with design thinking, who are innovators and problem solvers.

Once you are here they work you hard and teach you a lot.  However, everyone here is EXTREMELY talented and hardworking.  It can be intimidating and get stressful and competitive.

Parsons was and is my dream school so I'm a little bit biased. Despite the challenges, I love it here.  It's an amazing creative environment where students learn to challenge themselves.

I hope I helped a bit, I'm happy to answer any questions that are emailed to me or left in the comments.

In other news, it is finals week. STRESSS!

xx, Nikkidee! :]

  1. THANK YOU SO MUCH! :) You're like, my favourite person now. Haha. But almost really.

Anyways, do you mind if I ask you with a few questions? -- 1. How would you describe your teachers/ classes? Like, would you say/think that they are better than most art/design schools? 2. How much work do you get on a nightly/ weekly basis? 3. What kind of things did you submit in your portfolio? / Could you post more / describe it? (I'm just trying to work on mine right now, so I kinda wanna make sure I'm on the right-ish track..)

I actually probably have a ton more, but I won't be too annoying! I liked reading your post and good luck with your finals! :) Thank you so much, you're officially my go-to person for this because no one else around here even knows what Parsons is! I hope you don't mind answering these / take your time! YOU"RE AMAZING.

    Happy holidays!

hahah don't worry i was the same way when i was applying. i would have been overjoyed to find someone with answers and would have pestered them until they duct taped my mouth shut :]

all i can think about right now is art history notes so i'll answer what questions i can in another parsons post :] i can't really compare parsons much to other schools because this is the only one i go to :p, but i have friends at other schools and did a bunch of research when i was applying so i'll try my best to answer comparisons

okay i need to stop procrastinating bye <3
