Style Direction: Watercolor Goth

Hello friends!
How are you on this fine spring day? I can literally hear birds chirping outside of my window. Even the grating sound of someone continuously pressing the buzzer in my neighbor's apartment can't annoy me today.
That being said, it is finals right now, and I kind of feel like I'm going to keel over and explode at any minute now. If you are in the middle of finals as you read this, good luck and remember to breathe!

In the spirit of spring time, I've decided to write up a little Style Direction post featuring my Spring and Summer 2012 style that I'm feeling right now.

For lack of a better name, I'm going to temporarily title it

Wicked Watercolor Riot GURL

or maybe Wicked for short. Maybe FROTH- frothy fresh goth.  Watercolor Wicked? There we go.  I like them both.

So anyway, forging on! When it comes to fashion, (and life), I crush on everything.  I can't help but mix a million elements into my personal style. My ADHD addled art student brain sops up everything and mixes it in the blender to spit out a darkly glittering cocktail of INSPIRING FEELINGS.

The recipe for my Watercolor Wicked style is as follows:

Take the fabrics, jewelry, and silhouettes of the First War era glam, dunk it in the colors of a Kathy Dennis Impressionist Watercolor, and sprinkle in the accessories of a true riot punk.

Use as many OLD THINGS as possible to achieve this look. (And remember, darling, time is elastic, and old is subjective.)

what i'm into for summer: fluffy shorts under fifties dresses, shredded and cropped tees, Peter Pan collars, fresh-to-death colorful sneakers, gypsy jewelry, comic book tee-shirts, spiked accessories, knee socks, black, pastels, flowers in my hair, snapbacks and baseball caps.

What's your style inspiration this summer?

Style Crush: Sonya Tayeh

♥ I have a total girl-crush on Sonya Tayeh.

Sonya is an American dancer and choreographer who was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Detroit, Michigan.
She is a choreographer and guest judge on the TV show So You Think You Can Dance?

I am a huge fan of Sonya's choreography, and SYTYCD is one of my favorite shows!
Besides being a super-amazing choreographer, Sonya is someone with admirable personal style.  From her hairstyles to her tattoos and everything she wears, Sonya is someone who knows who she is and isn't afraid to show it!

♥ Sonya choreographs "combat jazz", hip hop, and contemporary dance.

I love this interview with her. She is intense, adorable and awesome!

This video is a contemporary dance on So You Think You Can Dance that was choreographed by Sonya.

Seriously, look Sonya Tayeh up on YouTube, because if I had the space I would probably post all of her videos here!

♥ Sonya has a Myspace profile.
♥ Sonya's website is www.sonyatayehdance.com
♥ My post about the PULSE Tour in Atlantic City. Sonya was a guest choreographer and I took two of her classes there.

Who is inspiring you this week?

Style Crush: The Veronicas

The Veronicas are actually a band formed in 2004 by twin sisters Jessica and Lisa Origliasso. They are from Australia and you have probably heard their music on the radio. They have awesome voices and crazy awesome personal style. Also, they manage to never clash with each other's outfits!

Reasons The Veronicas Rock:

They got their name from the movie Heathers [which is totally awesome!]
There's a scene in the movie where Christian Slater asks, 'Are you a Heather?' and Winona Ryder's character answers, 'No, I'm a Veronica.'

They've won a bunch of cool music awards...
...which you can view a list of here.

They want to be known as a group or a band, not as a duo.
♪ "We don't want to be a pop duo group with two girls singing about relationships, we have everything that a rock band would have, so we are a band."

♥ They are super-cool philanthropists who give back.
The Veronicas are a part of the late Steve Irwin's Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, a charity that deals with the protection of animals and their natural environments.
In January 2009, it was announced Jess would pose nude for PETA.
Lisa marched at a rally in support of gay marriage in California protesting against Proposition 8.

I really like most of their music, especially this song:

This video is ridiculous... where can I find a party like that? Maybe the Veronicas can show me?

Who's inspiring you right now?

Style Crush: Marla Singer

Sorry for the lack of posts lately! I've been super-busy getting ready for school and being with my friends before we all split for schoooool.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love summer. I'm in love with summer. I would love to marry the wonderful season of summer. I would love for it to last forever. But in my opinion, it is autumn that has the best fashion. And this fall fashion season, I'm lookin' to Marla Singer for some style inspiration.

Helena Bonham Carter is one of my favorite actresses. She played Marla Singer, the twisted love interest of Tyler Durden in the 1999 movie Fight Club. She's a fantastic character in what is both one of my favorite books and favorite movies...I thought that with all of the gothy and messy looking lines coming up for fall, Marla could provide some inspiration.

She's like a bad-ass Audrey Hepburn.

Marla Singer: I got this dress at a thrift store for one dollar.
Narrator: It was worth every penny.
Marla Singer: It's a bridesmaid's dress. Someone loved it intensely for one day, and then tossed it. Like a Christmas tree. So special. Then, bam, it's on the side of the road.

Narrator: When people think you're dying, they really, really listen to you, instead of just...
Marla Singer: - instead of just waiting for their turn to speak?

So awesome.

In other news, I move into my dorm in three days. Yay, college!!!

Style Crush: Beth Ditto

Beth Ditto, singer of the band The Gossip is awesome. For a lot of reasons.

Here are some reasons she is the style crush of the week:

♥ She knows how to rock

♥ She turned down making clothes for Topshop because of their "Size Limitations", and is instead designing clothes for Evans, a plus-sized clothing chain

♥ She was nominated for the 2007 NME Awards Sexiest Woman of the Year.

♥ She is the winner of the following awards:

 2006 Coolest Person in Rock
Glamour Awards International Artist of the Year

♥ Her favorite song is "Oh Bondage, Up Yours" by Xray Spex

♥  She supports LGBT and feminist causes and is super outspoken about them

♥ She's got sick style

Things I Loooove This Week!

♥ The movie Factory Girl. I love it! It actually came out early 2007, I think... it stars Siena Miller as Edie Sedgwick! Since the movie Grey Gardens is out in movie theaters now, about Jackie O's aunt and cousin Edith Beale and Little Edie Beale, I figured it would be appropriate to re-fall in love with everything Edie!

♥ Dying my hair... more pink! :]

Twitter! I know I write about it all the time, but I seriously love it. True, some people take it a little too far- there is such thing as Too Much Information, even on the internet!- but I think it's one of the best social networkin' devices on the interblag.

Overheard in New York. Probably the funniest website ever, and it's a good procrastination tool! :p
Planning outfits for events- like prom :] I have tons of prom outfits on Polyvore- I'll share them here :]

Anticipation! April is almost over... and from now on the rest of the school year is pretty much jam-packed with events! I'm so excited!

Facing your fears

Late-night phone calls

Panera Bread :]

♥ The Goodburger Movie!!!

♥ Car Dance Parties

Earth Day parties!
Love your mother... Get it - mother earth? :p

What is making you smile this week?

Style Crush: Lady Gaga

I love Lady Gaga.
Her music videos have an awesome dance party vibe; her style is futuristic with a touch of 80's. Lady Gaga has fantastic makeup...and so much glitterrrrrr! Also, her lightning bolt symbol is awesome.

I officially have a style crush on her.

Photobucket

She's in New York on December 31. I sooo want to see her live. That would be the coolest New Year's Eve dance party ever.

Also, I love this video. Why don't I get invited to parties like that? haha ;]
